COCHIN ART FAIR 8TH EDITION 2023

We stand awe-struck beside the ocean
The waves come one after the other, igniting our senses. The scent of
the salty sea-breeze. Our eyes soaring beyond the infinite waters...The roaring
wildness and the calm, serene meditative stillness...All these makes us puny
creatures in front of the oceanic infinity...Only the sea can arouse such vivid
emotions in the minds of us spectators. The sea provides / promises candid
ideas which binds science and art. The soul is synonym to the essence of a
human being... The non-materialistic self which imparts personality and feeling
of oneness with the universe in relation to religion and philosophy in all
vividity. True, the sea is the soul of emotions and the soul a sea of
dreams green and grey.
Sea is Soul
Soul is Sea

The idea of observing
nature from its close quarters,
has led me to see that, nature
in every different region
manifests itself in many different ways.
For every developmental project
natural resources have largely been
exploited. We have now fallen into an
inescapable predicament. Both as an
individual and an artist, this
predicament comes to disturb me
deeply. By taking an extreme position
in favour of the environment, I have
developed a certain inclination to express
in my works something suggestive
of this dilemma.

BABITHA RAJIV

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity
to be born on this Earth and experience life.
My love and inspiration for art
come from the beauty of nature, which
serves as the cornerstone of my creative
work. I create a diverse array of art,
featuring characters ranging from tiny
creatures to majestic trees, solid rocks,
and fellow humans. I don't limit myself to any
particular genre or landscape; instead,
I draw inspiration from the entire Universe.
My creative approach to contemporary
art is rooted in a global mindset, shaped by
everything I've witnessed, heard, read,
and learned from others. In my drawings,
I cover a wide range of topics, from periodicals
to exploring the depths of animal and
human emotions. My method involves
addressing serious subjects with a touch of
humor, creating a unique and engaging
perspective. I also derive
great joy from creating short story art and
drawing them into multiple frames to tell a
cohesive narrative. Some of my
paintings come to life without a  specific plan.
And I call out what I want to convey my
thoughts and feelings
to the world through my work of art.

GIGIMOL K THOMAS

My art is a language of shades.
I participate in this world in two ways:
being and creating. As a being,
I have to induce myself to
be domestic and social and susceptible
to being dependent on different matters
than other beings, such as
public transport systems, telephones,
locked and decorated living spaces, etc.
In terms of creativity, I am free, extremely
free to imagine, and compose works of
art that always provide me
with comfort and security in the face of
social or familial perplexities. My space
is a living planet with millions
of life forms, including humans. Life
fascinates me more than any other
matter in this universe because
life feels and listens in a fabulous language
that is full of passion and adoration.
Naturally, I have a responsibility
to respond to them, and I do that with kind
and gentle language; in my art. To me,
art is a language to respond to every minuscule
whisper from a leaf and a tree, a bee
and a blue whale, a pebble, and a
flowing river. My art is a language full of
shades to communicate with other beings.

George Martin was born in Kerala in 1973.
He received his Bachelor’s degree in Sculpture from
the College of Fine Arts, Thiruvanthapuram in 1998,
and his Master’s degree in the same from the Government
College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, in 2001.
The first recipient of Art India Magazine’s
Promising Artist Award in 2005,
George Martin’s works are a spectral of luscious color.
He paints a magical view of the world around us,
which appears to be spinning at a dizzying speed.
His acrylic abstractions exuberate copious amounts
of energy and are an ultimate representation of
modern urban life. There are no limitations to
color or form in Martin’s visual extravaganza;
in a single canvas he is able to merge multiple
cultures. However, when viewed more carefully,
Martin’s densely populated compositions resonate
the transitory and disunited true nature of our world.
Martin’s most recent solo shows include ‘Cavities’ at
Palette Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008; ‘Lost Article’
at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, in 2007; and
‘Footloose of Blue Pencil’ at Bombay Art Gallery,
Mumbai, in 2006. The artist has also participated in
a number of group shows, the most recent being,
‘From Surface to Origin: Journeys Through Recent
Art From India and Thailand’ at Gallery Soul flower,
Bangkok, in 2008; ‘Shifting Terrains Altered Realities’
at the Shrine Gallery and Empire Art, New Delhi,
in 2008; ‘Images/Urban/Neon’ at 1 x 1 Art Gallery,
Dubai, in 2007; and ‘Encode- Decode’ at Palette Art
Gallery, New Delhi, in 2006. Besides the Promising
Artist Award, Martin also won the Kashi

MEHAK GARG

My approach to art is both captivating and
profound. By delving into the psychological and
emotional aspects of human existence, I am tapping into a
fundamental aspect of being human that often goes
beyond what is immediately observable in the material
world. My intention to give form to intangible feelings and
experiences opens up a unique avenue of artistic
expression that allows viewers to connect with the
deeper layers of their own emotions and experiences.
The way I portray the closeness and detachment
between humans through visual connections and
subdued colors adds complexity and depth to my
artwork. I am trying to master the art of creating
a silent psychological atmosphere that speaks
volumes through the emotional intensity it conveys.
This balance of silence and emotional depth allows
viewers to engage with the artwork in a way that
goes beyond words, creating a profound and
contemplative experience. The intentional
arrangement of forms in my artwork demonstrates
my ability to shape narratives and set specific
moods, which can evoke a spectrum of
emotions in viewers. This skillful manipulation
of forms and spaces encourages
the audience to reflect on their own lives and
relationships, prompting a personal and introspective
engagement with my art. The use of subdued tones
of color is a powerful choice that further
enhances the overall ambiance of my artwork.
By evoking a sense of pause, interval, or emptiness
in space, \I create a contemplative mood that
invites viewers to step back and reflect. The subdued
colors are a channel to tranquility and introspection,
allowing viewers to delve into the emotional landscapes
I’ve created. In summary, my artistic approach
embraces the significance of psychological and
emotional aspects in human lives and translates
them into thought-provoking and emotionally rich
compositions. By engaging viewers on a deeper level,
my art becomes a catalyst for introspection and
self-awareness, making it an invaluable
contribution to the artistic world.

Reji's paintings exude a matter of fact quality.  His use of bold,
slightly rounded figuration constructs a naïve style reminiscent of Gauguin.
Despite - or perhaps because of - their apparent simplicity, his paintings are
enigmatic and the motifs he engenders are difficult to decipher.  His work is
multifaceted and complex in its analysis of the individual's relationship to his
external environment.  Often political in inflection, his canvases explore the
connection between psychological states of mind and socio-political behavior.

VINOD AMBALATHARA

Started doing live paintings more seriously during the
covid shutdown.Almost every day the activity
continued.Morning walks made every day beautiful.
The rising sun, the shadow and light
changing every second made things magical.A dfferent
feeling will permeate the scene around us.,
By the time a visual is completed, another experience will
spread  in the scenery around us.In the snowdrop
the sloping grass, among the grass, the footprints of
many species that have walked along. rocky,
thorny, sandstone hills,valleys, cloudless skies,
all this  Came into my painting.Later it was felt that the
surrounding vegetation should be painted with more
detail. My house is situated on the edge of a huge red
rock that stretches for kilometers. My paintings
represent a landscape of memories of a warm life among
red rocks and grasslands. There is a firm feel that many
human footprints are imprinted on the curves
and ups and downs.Closed cashew factory, old Beedi Co.,
Vacant Tenement Buildings, Detached
houses All these are born out of observations during
the lockdown. The rest of the living environment
the thorn,habitat... Like a visual dictionary the surroundings
unravel before us with a magical effect..The urge
to paint becomes more and more  intense.
