Cochin Artfair 2020

CURATED BY | O.SUNDER

In 2016, we made a tryst with
destiny with the launch of the
Cochin Art Fair.
Now the time has come to reaffirm our
commitment to the cause by organizing
the fifth edition of Cochin Art Fair
viz,Cochin Art Fair 2020.
The enthusiasm and participation of
 artists in CAF 2016,17,18,19
is definitely the main source of inspiration
of cochinartcube to organize this 5th edition.
The 5th edition of the Cochin Art Fair 2020
is a portrayal of determination. Amidst the
unprecedented crisis the world is facing now,
our art fraternity is going the extra mile
to put together an art show to keep the
spirits high. Though footfalls and figures are
increasing by the year, growing into a haven
for artists and art lovers is our biggest
achievement. It is a delight to see
our community thriving.
 Taking the pandemic into consideration,
we are going virtual this year!
Cochin Art Fair 2020.

“ The artists and their works may be physically
 distant but socially close”.

BHASKARAN BARA

Seeds of the Dispossessed
is a series about the rudiments in the
womb of our being: the crumb
and kernel, mote and morsel.spore and
ovum sown among thorns and
thrown on the wayside.and thrown
on the wayside. The root hair and rhizomes of
dead trees that lie buried  deep under
the earth. They are the first failed runes,
the flint stone scrawls and scribbles
on walls of the cave that form our
speech, half-notes of hope  and sorrow
that wait to be made into a song.

R. Nandakumar

Art Historian, & Culture Critic

I find a bit of solace in not being one of those
blessed souls who can keep writing on art even
now in the midst of these troubled times, either
theorising the post-human dimension of the
mandatory sanitary mask or indulging in the
narrative effusions of the under-theorised
connoisseurial  kind. Writing on art now against
the backdrop of the human misery and under
the looming shadow of foreboding, sounds in the
first place like an ingenuous vainglory or an
innocuous indulgence. When the whole

mankind – literally and not metaphorically – is
coming to grips with the alarming realisation of
the mortal insignificance of the way of all flesh
and the fatal susceptibility of everything human,
it is a historically engulfing experience.
To think of the sheer magnitude of human misery
in this country at the beginning of the lockdown,
especially for the migrant labourers who had to
walk several hundred kilometres in the scorching
sun to reach home, with no food, water, shelter,
or transportation, sends shudders down one’s spine.
It was horrendous, to put it short.
Are large areas of human activity that have all
along been the cherished preserves of
the most humanistic calling and expressions of
the lofty ideals of humaneness like art
(all forms included) receding as one large area of
redundancy, having lost its relevance to the scourge
before which everything human goes awry? It is to
be seen how far art is equipped to relate itself
meaningfully to the new system of values and the
social dispensation that has come about in some
inexorable manner challenging all its earlier privileged
ambiguity and haziness.

Six months on, as the situation gets worse day after
day, people have come to terms with the new ecology
of social distance and to retreat into self-imposed
confinement and masked anonymity that they have to
live by as if that is the way it is, urged by the As the
public domain has shrunk or receded, obviating the
need for the kind of orientations sustained by the
psycho-behavioural spaces of inter-subjectivity and the
very notion of the materiality of dimensional space
(as for example, of the brick and mortar kind), it has
given way to an all-impersonal surrogate in the form
of the virtual stand-in.

The sense of immediacy and intimacy evoked by
human presence was predicated on certain well-
accepted social mores that in turn were sustained
by the sense of community and the gregarious
commonness of social traffic through expressions of
closeness, togetherness, proximity and neighborliness,
values that have a civilizational investment. It is as
if the human race is at the transit point of an
apocalyptic rite of passage into the late-human or
the early post-human.We are so much used to a pattern
of thinking that unless we can impute a causal agency
with an identifiable human factor, we are generally at a
loss to make sense of what is happening to us. But for
the racial slur about the wantonness of eating habits of
certain people, we could not come up with any man-
made reasons behind the spread of the pestilence. With
all the portentous foreboding of the scourge, what  we
are left with is an awareness that man has much to
atone for. It is as if the depredations that man has been
inflicting on nature and his over-zealous self-assertions
of greedy pragmatism have finally met with their
inevitable nemesis. But life has to move on.
Like what Bruegel seems to be telling us through his
Fall of Icarus.

It is in this sense that the fifth edition of Cochin Art Fair
that is currently on in its online version is a quite
heart-warming and affirmative gesture as an art event.
I greet O.Sunder for his curatorial efforts and congratulate
all the participating artists for their work and goodwill.
